The Moral Intelligence of Children

Ivan Gaetz

Robert Coles' recent book focuses attention on how children act with each other and with parents, educators and mentors, and how sensitive and caring adults can guide children along the path of developing moral intelligence by recognizing and encouraging moral behavior. In this review essay, Ivan Gaetz places Coles' insights within the context of historical philosophies of education and within the current of contemporary concerns in moral eduaction, and shows how Coles provides a helpful voice in the discussion. Mr. Gaetz is Library Director at Regent College, Vancouver, B.C.
