From the Verbal to the Visual: Orthodox Icons and the Sanctification of Sight

Daniel B. Clendenin

While Protestants typically focus on the written word and enjoy a text-oriented cultus, Orthodox believers are inclined to aesthetic modes of worship and theological expression. Dan Clendenin argues that the history and theology of the icon illustrates this fundamental difference between the two traditions. Mr. Clendenin taught at Moscow State University and now resides in Mt. Hermon, California.
