Some Christian colleges have opted for faculty salary policies involving differential pay by discipline. This practice is allegedly justified as a necessary response to market pressures. C. Stephen Layman believes that just as differential pay by sex is unfair even if the market demands it, so differential pay by discipline is unfair. Moreover, there are ways of coping with the market which to not amount to discrimination by discipline. Mr. Layman is Associate Professor of Philosophy at Seattle Pacific University.
