Caravaggio's London Supper at Emmaus : A Counter-Reformation Reading of Luke 24

Heidi J. Hornik and Mikeal C. Parsons

Heidi Hornik and Mikeal Parsons explore the historical, literary, visual and theological contexts of Caravaggio's London Supper at Emmaus. Caravaggio's (or more properly, his patron's) "visual exegesis" of the story draws upon themes of the Catholic Reformation; nonetheless, he employs a number of interpretive strategies that can enrich our reading of Luke 24, whether Catholic or Protestant. Heidi Hornik is associate professor of art at Baylor University, and Mikeal Parsons is associate professor of religion at Baylor University.
