From the perspective of recent work in economic geography, Iain Wallace engages critically with the neoliberal discourse of globalization, identifying it as an ideology of the powerful. The processes of time-space compression, de-territorialization, and the formation of global production systems are explained. The environmental unsustainability of the global economy is identified. David Harvey’s Spaces of Hope is noted as a brave but unsatisfying utopian response to the current world order. Selected Christian responses to globalization are also judged utopian, but are seen to offer some substantive ways forward for the people of God. Mr. Wallace is Professor of Geography and Environmental Studies at Carleton University.
