From Church Blessing to Quinceañera Barbie®: America as “Spiritual Benefactor” in La Quinceañera

Kristen Deiter

Kristen Deiter demonstrates how, in recent decades, the American Catholic Church and American popular culture have reshaped the Latino socioreligious custom of la quinceañera. After exploring the power struggle that has emerged from these two “spiritual benefactors” pulling the tradition in opposite directions, she proposes that Church leaders embrace a new legacy to help Latino-American teenaged girls and their families cope with the tensions of celebrating quinceañeras in the twenty-first century. Mrs. Deiter is a doctoral student in English at State University of New York at Binghamton and Director of Records Management and Archives at Marywood University, Scranton, Pennsylvania.
