Hospitality and Christian Higher Education

Elizabeth Newman

In this essay Elizabeth Newman seeks to contribute to the wider conversation on Christian identity and higher education by focusing on the practice of Christian hospitality. How might an understanding of God’s hospitality to us and of the giftedness of our lives shape our understanding and practice of education? She argues that the practice of hospitality offers a richer way to think about Christian higher education than either modern attempts that relegate Christian identity to a sphere or postmodern views that embrace “diversity.” Ms. Newman is Professor of Theology and Ethics at Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond.
