Using the e-learning phenomenon as a basis for reflection and discussion, Alan Hueth challenges our traditional notions of distance, technology, and learning. He argues that the present dialogue reflects reductionist and simplistic thinking, which hinders education in both traditional face-to-face and e-learning modes. He suggests that educators in Christian higher education (CHE) consider a more systemic approach that considers information and communication theories. Combining research and an examination of the pedagogical methods of Jesus Christ, Hueth reveals some important implications of this approach for both e-learning and “traditional” face-to-face instruction for CHE instructors and administrators. Mr. Hueth is Professor of Communication at Point Loma Nazarene University.
